Multi-Chain System 2.0

Summer 2019

Multi-Chain System

Gaudi used hanging-chain models to find form. Why not welding the hanged chains directly and using them as the structures? No one has done that before. And it works. This multi-chain system can be structure material, it can load tremendous weight, and you can see people stand on a single welded chain links.

Summer 2017

Napavilion

Far far away, behind the Qin Ling mountains, far from the city, there we built the Napavilion. The Napavilion is an intimate yet expansive geometric pavilion designed as an optical device for viewing the rural Lantian landscape.

Corbel Brick Wall

You say to brick, “What do you want, brick?” Brick says to you, “I like freeform.” if you say to brick, “freeform is expensive, and I can use concrete to cast any shape. What do you think of that, brick?” Brick says: “I like freeform.”

December 2018

Snow Cube

Build with snow just like what we did when we were children. But this time, we did it more architecture way. We use Generative and Algorithm design to get the form of the installation. When we build it, the outdoor temperature is around -20 ℃, and with everyone’s hard-working, we finished it in 2 days. The form of the curved cube is so smooth and complex in 3d on that scale.

July 2017

Paper Form

By using cardboard paper, we built a very complex 3d form. From a flat sheet to 3d shape, this kind of transformation is needed to combine with the force dynamics. How to use a thin shell as the structure and the form is an exciting direction.

November 2014

Tower

Brick is a very traditional construction material in architecture history, and it still has lots of potentials today. By using Procedural design, we built an upside-down cone brick tower as a wine rack.

Summer 2016

Dancing

This sculpture is a part of the six dof movement research project. We use sensors to recorder the people’s movements, and transfer the data to 3d coordinates in Matlab. Then we design and build the dancing movement in the physical world.

Summer 2016

Soft Canopy

Wood is soft but not soft enough. We find a way to make curved timber. By cutting with different distances, different thickness, different depths, and different angles, we can control the curvatures of the wood sticks, and make straight to curved.

June 2014

The Tree

The stair is unique. With the power of Procedural design and Digital fabrication, we built the Topological tree branches like structure for the stair. And we try to simulate the treetop by using thin wood sticks, so people walk in the wood stick tunnel will show very rich gradation.

December 2017

BIAD WALL

We add one more direction of the force, which means we add a new pull force to the corbel block system so that the blocks can grab each other, and we wrote a program to transform any freeform shape to the block system. Now we can build any 3d form very efficient.
